Fires in the Garden

for one piano four-hands (2025)

7’

Fires in the Garden borrows and grafts material from two well- known and well-trimmed French ‘gardens’ in the piano four-hands repertoire - Ravel’s ‘Le jardin féerique’ (‘the Fairy Garden’) from Ma mere l’oye (1910) and Faure’s ‘Le jardin de Dolly’ from the Dolly Suite op. 56 (1896). There are direct quotations, which are then disassembled and fragmented (not dissimilar to Ravel’s approach in La valse) as well as ornamented and re-contextualised harmonies from Faure’s Dolly.
